Does Jerry Springer Have a Law Degree?

Does Jerry Springer Have a Law Degree? Jerry Springer was a politician. Then he was the host of one of the most popular, longest-running syndicated shows in TV history. Then he was a musician and an actor, appearing on Broadway and starring in his own opera (it was… not good). So he must be some kind of genius, right? Eh, probably not—he just won the genetic lottery by being born with a lot of natural talent and then being born into money. You can blame Springer for many things—the decline of Western Civilization or at least Eastern Cincinnati, for example—but you can’t blame him for using his advantages to get ahead.

Nor can you blame him for quitting politics when it got boring, or for making over $100 million with a show that is popular only because it’s so terrible that it’s funny. After all these years, we still don’t know why The Jerry Springer Show exists (other than to make money), but we do know one thing: whether or not Jerry Springer has a law degree shouldn’t matter anymore. Let’s take another look at this famous man and see how far he came from his humble beginnings as mayor of Cincy-town before becoming an entertainment icon (and occasional lawyer).

Does Jerry Springer Have a Law Degree?

The answer is yes, but it’s complicated. Springer was a lawyer in his home state of Ohio and a politician as well, but he never practiced as a lawyer.

After graduating from Ohio University with both bachelor’s and law degrees in 1966, Springer passed the bar exam in 1968 and went on to practice law at various firms around Cincinnati. He also served as an assistant prosecutor before moving into politics: he ran for Congress twice (in 1974 and 1976) without success; served as mayor of Cincinnati from 1977 to 1979; became a talk show host on WLWT-TV station (which later became WKRC-TV) in Cincinnati, where he would appear as Jerry Sours until 1991 when he joined NBC News; hosted game shows like “The Biggest Winner” from 1996 through 2000; produced documentaries about crime victims for Court TV; hosted weekly political talk shows called “Inside Out”and “America Undercover”; produced two autobiographical documentaries about his life—”A Simple Twist of Fate: The Untold Story of Jerry Springer” (2011) and “The Man Who Sold America.”

From there he went into politics as the mayor of Cincinnati before moving to television as an anchorman for WLWT-TV in 1968. In 1975 he moved to NBC where he hosted the National Heads-Up Poker Championship until 1992. He also hosted game shows like Twenty One and The Joker’s Wild prior to hosting his own talk show called The Jerry Springer Show which premiered in 1991 on NBC and ran until 2018 when it was canceled by ABC Television Network due to declining ratings.

Does Springer still do politics?

Springer has also done a short stint in politics. He was elected mayor of Cincinnati in 1971, at the age of 29, and served one term. In 1982, he was elected to Congress as a Democrat representing Ohio’s First District; he won re-election four times before announcing his retirement in 1995. He ran for the Democratic nomination for governor of Ohio in 2006 but lost to Ted Strickland.

Despite his political background, Springer has tried to keep himself distanced from partisan issues as host of The Jerry Springer Show (though you can’t fault him for never being afraid to use his platform as an opportunity to get involved).
